November Workshop: Media Skills for Community Groups

Date: Monday, November 9, from 5 to 6 pm (1-hour workshop, followed by optional 30 minutes of networking)

Location: The Current meeting space at Keweenaw Community Foundation, 417 Quincy Street, Hancock.

Workshop Details

Whether you’re sharing news about an event, a program, or a community need, being ready to talk with reporters can make a big difference in how your organization’s story is told. But many people feel nervous when a microphone or camera shows up.

This hands-on workshop will help you feel more prepared. The first half will cover the basics of working with the media, including how to shape your message, what reporters look for, and tips for staying calm and clear. The second half is practice, with mock interviews so you can try out what you’ve learned in a supportive setting.

You’ll leave with:

  • A simple approach to preparing for an interview

  • Tips for getting your key message across

  • Real practice answering questions on the spot

No media experience is required. Whether you’re a nonprofit staff member, board member, or volunteer, this session is for you.

Please bring a laptop or notebook if you'd like to take notes or save resources shared during the workshop.

  • Free to attend, no RSVP required

  • 60-minute workshop, followed by 30 minutes of optional Q&A and networking

  • Open discussion + peer support

  • Light refreshments provided

Facilitated by Jesse Wiederhold

We’re excited to welcome Jesse Wiederhold as this session’s facilitator. Jesse is the managing director of Visit Keweenaw, where he oversees operations of the Houghton Visitor Center and helps lead local membership engagement and outreach. Before joining Visit Keweenaw in 2023, he was the Houghton/Hancock Bureau Reporter for WLUC TV6, so he knows what it’s like on both sides of the interview.
