The Current: Community In Motion
What is The Current?
The Current is a new community support initiative from the Keweenaw Community Foundation that provides practical resources, shared learning opportunities, and hands-on support for those doing community work across the Keweenaw.
Why The Current?
At KCF, we work alongside organizations, volunteers, and community leaders across the Keweenaw every day. Through that work, we heard many of the same challenges:
Limited time and staff capacity
Limited physical meeting space
Difficulty accessing tools and resources
Isolation between organizations
A need for practical, hands-on support
Limited opportunities to connect and collaborate
The Current was created in response to these identified needs. Supported by grant funding from the Trust for Civic Life, this initiative is designed to offer flexible, evolving support for people working to strengthen our communities.
Support for a Community In Motion
Communities are always adapting and responding to new opportunities and challenges. That's why we called it Community in Motion—because the people doing community work across the Keweenaw are constantly moving good ideas forward, building connections, and creating positive change.
Moving Community Work Forward
Whether it’s borrowing event supplies, attending workshops, reserving meeting space, building skills together, or connecting with collaborators, The Current seeks to help local organizations and community groups strengthen their work and build relationships.
As community needs evolve, The Current will continue adapting alongside them. Strong communities are built together, not in silos.
Offerings at The Current
Monthly Workshops and Learning Sessions
The Current hosts regular educational workshops and skill-sharing opportunities focused on topics requested by local groups.
These sessions are designed to be approachable, practical, and useful for organizations and volunteers at all experience levels.
Workshops take place on the second Monday of each month. Sign up for our email newsletter to be the first to know!
Reserve The Current Meeting Space
Looking for a space to meet, host a workshop, or bring your group together? The Keweenaw Community Foundation offers a welcoming and accessible meeting room in the heart of downtown Hancock.
This space is available free of charge to nonprofits, local government entities, and other community-focused groups working to create a positive impact in the Keweenaw. It's one way we support collaboration, connection, and shared progress throughout our region.
To maintain our 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, users must adhere to our room’s intended purpose and KCF non-discrimination policies.
Resource Loan Closet
Community groups often need supplies, equipment, and event materials—but not everyone has the budget to purchase them.
The Current includes a growing collection of shared resources available to borrow, including:
Projector and screen
Virtual meeting equipment (OWL 3)
Event supplies and decorations
Wagon (for easier transportation of supplies at events)
Signage, stands, and other displays
