Donor Advised Funds
About Donor Advised Funds
A donor advised fund (DAF) is a simple and flexible way to organize your charitable giving. You make a gift, receive an immediate tax benefit, and recommend grants to the organizations and causes you care about.
We handle the administrative details so you can focus on making an impact.
When you establish a donor advised fund with the Keweenaw Community Foundation, you gain more than a giving tool – you gain a partner. We bring deep local knowledge, strong relationships, and a commitment to connecting your generosity with the opportunities and needs that matter most across the Keweenaw.
Why Create a Donor Advised Fund
A donor advised fund gives you the flexibility to give with intention, now and over time. Here are some of the key reasons donors choose this approach:
Stay involved in your giving
Simplify your charitable giving
Receive immediate tax benefits
Grow your charitable impact
Support multiple causes with one fund
Access local knowledge on community needs
Reduce administrative burden
Involve your family and build a legacy

How to Start a Donor Advised Fund
Starting a donor advised fund is a simple, guided process—designed to help you turn your values into meaningful impact in the Keweenaw.
1. Start with a Conversation
Connect with our team to talk through what matters most to you—your interests, goals, and the kind of impact you want to make. We’ll help you explore whether a donor advised fund is the right fit.
2. Define the Fund
Choose a name for the fund and outline how you’d like it to work, including your giving priorities and any plans for future involvement or succession.
3. Make Your Initial Gift
Establish the fund with a contribution such as cash, appreciated stock, or other assets. This gift is eligible for an immediate tax deduction and becomes the foundation for your charitable giving.
4. Grow the Fund
The fund is invested, allowing it to grow over time and increase your ability to give.
5. Recommend Grants
When you’re ready, recommend grants to the organizations and causes you care about locally. We handle the due diligence and administration, making the process seamless for you.
6. Stay Connected to Your Giving
The donor advised fund evolves with you. Continue contributing, involve your family, and respond to needs and opportunities as they arise.
