Keweenaw Heartlands - Hear Directly From the Candidates!

Thirteen individuals in Keweenaw County are running for the Keweenaw Heartlands Recreational and Natural Resources Authority Board. Many of these candidates participated in a public candidates’ forum hosted by KORC on Wednesday, September 23. During the forum, candidates had time to give three statements and then took questions from the audience.

At the request of audience members, all candidates were given the opportunity to provide written answers to the forum’s three prompts. They are as follows:

  1. Please introduce yourself, talk about your background, education and experience and why voters in Keweenaw County should select you to serve on the Authority Board.

  2. The Keweenaw Heartlands Recreational and Natural Resources Authority Board has been organized to manage recreational, forestry and other natural resources pursuits for the public on approximately 20,000 acres in Keweenaw County. Please discuss your perspectives on forestry and outdoor recreation.

  3. With the Keweenaw Tip, Fort Wilkins, and very soon acquired 10,000 acres, the DNR will own approximately 20,000 acres adjacent to the land managed by the Authority Board. In addition, Keweenaw County, Grant Township, Eagle Harbor Township, the Keweenaw County Road Commission and the Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District, and several conservancies own adjacent properties. Motorized and nonmotorized trail clubs also manage trails across ownerships.  Please discuss how you envision working with the DNR and local units of government, as well as other partners, to best manage the land under Authority stewardship.

You can find the list of candidates and their responses, if they provided, by visiting the Keweenaw Heartlands Project webpage. Candidates are on the November ballot, and the Keweenaw Heartlands Authority Board will officially begin in January 2027!
