Keweenaw Community Foundation is excited to celebrate the ongoing impact of the Bethany Lutheran Church of Keweenaw Endowment Fund, a designated endowment fund supporting the educational, spiritual, and community outreach missions of Bethany Lutheran Church and its members, which has recently been transferred to the Keweenaw Community Foundation.

The church established an endowment fund in 1992, recognizing the need for long-term support of the congregation and the broader community. The fund embodies the church's commitment to nurturing faith and service, from helping young people attend college or seminary to supporting mission work and community programming.

“The fund was originally envisioned as a way to invest in the future of our members—especially young people pursuing post-secondary education rooted in Christian values,” said a church representative. “Over the years, it has helped support educational goals, strengthen our outreach, and sustain our role as a community gathering place.”

Bethany Lutheran Church, located in the Keweenaw Peninsula, also supports Shepherd of the Sea, a seasonal chapel in Copper Harbor. Bethany Lutheran serves the community year-round by hosting Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, music lessons, a quilting group, and seasonal events like Trunk-or-Treat.

Funding Priorities Include:

  • Scholarships for members pursuing higher education

  • Leadership development and faith-based programming

  • Community service and outreach to those in need

  • Support for ELCA missions and ministries

  • Capital improvements at Bethany Lutheran Church

The church recently partnered with the Keweenaw Community Foundation to hold and administer the Endowment Fund to help expand its reach and deepen its impact through additional contributions and visibility.
