Fundraising with Heart: A Recap of "Take Your Fundraising Efforts to the Next Level"

KCF Nonprofit Education and Networking session on April 14, 2025.

Earlier this month, the Keweenaw Community Foundation hosted Take Your Fundraising Efforts to the Next Level and Find Joy Doing It, at the Michigan Tech Lakeshore Center, part of KCF’s Nonprofit Education and Networking Series. Fundraising expert and philanthropic consultant Mike Goorhouse facilitated the session, delivering 15 powerful lessons drawn from years of real-world experience.

This session was part of KCF’s ongoing commitment to empowering local nonprofits through shared learning and collaboration. We were thrilled to welcome 35 participants and are grateful for the energy and insights they brought. If you missed this session, we hope to see you at a future event!

Here are a few highlights from the session:

Trust and Transparency Go Hand in Hand

KCF Nonprofit Education and Networking session on April 14, 2025.

Building trust with donors begins within your organization. It’s shaped by strong leadership and a consistent, genuine character. When you lead with openness, donors are more likely to offer their support. Over time, authenticity lays the foundation for lasting credibility.

Communicate with Purpose

One size doesn’t fit all. Tailor your messages and meet people where they are. Learn your donors’ communication preferences and what truly matters to them. Whether it's a personalized note, a behind-the-scenes photo, or a compelling story, meaningful communication drives connection.

Tell Stories and Show the Stats

Donors are moved by both heart and head. Blend real stories of impact with data to create presentations and appeals that resonate with a broader audience. Be transparent, be real, and don’t be afraid to ask for support, even if it’s just a follow-up conversation when the timing feels right.

Gratitude Is Everything

Saying thank you isn’t just polite—it’s powerful. Say it well, say it promptly, and mean it.

Reframe How You Think About Events

Fundraising events aren’t just about raising money—they’re about raising friends and collaborators. Know your event’s purpose, invite the right people, and ensure a seamless experience. A successful event is measured not only by dollars raised, but also by connections made.

Meet Donors Where They’re At

Every organization has major donors, even if they haven't given major gifts yet. Start with those closest to you, such as past staff, board members, volunteers, and program participants. Cultivate those relationships first.

Make Giving Easy

From QR codes at events to monthly giving options, convenience matters. Planned giving is also a powerful—yet underutilized—tool for long-term sustainability.
