Superior Search and Rescue Receives Grant for K9 Equipment

During the Fall 2025 grant cycle, Superior Search and Rescue received a grant from the Keweenaw Community Foundation’s Community Impact Fund to purchase essential new equipment for its K9 team—including GPS collars, protective and identifying work dog harnesses, protective boots and gear, training aids, K9 first aid kits, and more.

Based in Houghton, Superior Search and Rescue serves residents and visitors across Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon Counties. Especially in this region, search-and-rescue (SAR) operations often face challenges due to distance, harsh weather, and difficult terrain. With trained and equipped K9 teams, SAR volunteers are better prepared to respond swiftly and safely.

Superior Search and Rescue teams now deploy wearing protective gear that allows dogs to work safely on ice, sharp rocks, and other rough terrain common in the Western UP. The GPS and light equipment improve visibility during night operations and in low-visibility conditions, while first-aid kits and cooling equipment help ensure the safety of both handlers and K9s during extended searches.

These items are going to make a huge impact in protecting both the dogs and humans in the various elements, from winter to summer.

That impact is already being felt in the field. During a recent winter training exercise, the K9 team used protective gear while simulating a missing-person search in very cold, snowy weather and on uneven terrain. This meaningful training helps K9s and handlers feel better prepared for real rescue situations.

“This level of preparedness strengthens our ability to support emergency responders and builds confidence among community members that trained K9 resources are ready when needed,” said Paige.

This project was selected as a grant recipient during the Keweenaw Community Foundation’s Fall 2025 cycle. Beyond emergency response, the grant supports ongoing training and professional development, strengthens partnerships with local agencies, and enhances regional preparedness.

We’re thankful for the donors who support the Community Impact Fund and are proud to support first responders and their K9 partners as they step in to provide critical, no-cost emergency services when communities need them most.
