New Support Initiative at KCF, “The Current: Community In Motion”

Keweenaw Community Foundation (KCF) is launching a new community support initiative, “The Current: Community in Motion,” offering shared resources, practical learning opportunities, and local connections for the people and organizations doing community work across the Keweenaw.

Collaboration is a cornerstone of KCF’s work across the region. Through partnerships, community conversations, and results from KCF’s Community Impact Survey, we consistently heard common challenges facing local organizations and volunteers: limited capacity, lack of accessible meeting space, a need for shared resources, and a desire to strengthen local relationships.

The Current was created in response to those needs. The initiative offers flexible, hands-on support to nonprofits, volunteer-led groups, municipalities, and community-focused organizations working to strengthen the Keweenaw.

"The Keweenaw is full of people who care deeply about their communities and are willing to step up to make things happen," said Robin Meneguzzo, CEO of the Keweenaw Community Foundation. "The Current is about making sure those individuals and organizations don't have to do that work alone. By sharing resources, knowledge, and connections, we can help strengthen the efforts already happening across our region."

The initiative was made possible through funding from the Trust for Civic Life, a national grantmaker investing in rural communities across the country. In 2025, KCF was selected as one of just 26 organizations nationwide to receive a Civic Hub grant supporting community collaboration, relationship-building, and civic participation.

Offerings through The Current include:

  • Regular workshops and learning sessions

  • One-on-one support with KCF staff for grant identification and application review, fundraising, marketing, and more

  • Free meeting space available for community groups in downtown Hancock

  • A shared resource loan closet with event and meeting supplies

  • Networking and collaboration opportunities

Monthly Skill-Building Workshops

Every second Monday of the month, The Current will host a free workshop or learning session designed to provide approachable and practical skill-building opportunities for organizations and volunteers of all experience levels.

Our next workshop, “Let’s Design an Event Flyer in Canva,” will take place on Monday, July 13. More details will be shared soon.

In addition to workshops and shared resources, The Current also offers one-on-one support with KCF’s Community Engagement Manager, Lauren Clark, who can assist organizations with marketing, communications, event promotion, brainstorming, and connecting with additional local resources.

“You don't need to have everything figured out before reaching out,” said Lauren Clark. “Whether you're planning an event, promoting a program, applying for a grant, or simply looking for someone to talk through an idea with, we're here to help. And if we don't have the answer, we'll help you find it.”

Join us for an Ice Cream Social and Open House!

KCF will host a public open house on Monday, June 8, to share more information about all our offerings, including The Current. Community members can learn about available resources, tour the meeting space, and connect with our new team members.

Community groups and organizations are also encouraged to share ideas for future workshops, resources, and support opportunities as The Current continues to grow.

Learn more about The Current and other available resources. For more information, please contact Lauren Clark, Community Engagement Manager, by emailing lauren@keweenawgives.org or calling 906-482-9673.
