The Ken “Bergy” Liimatta Hockey Scholarship
Honoring Ken “Bergy” Liimatta. Supporting CLK youth skaters and hockey players.
The Ken "Bergy" Liimatta Hockey Scholarship aims to provide children in the Calumet-Laurium-Keweenaw (CLK) region with the opportunity to learn how to skate and participate in the hockey club, regardless of their financial situation. By doing so, it helps families to support their children's interests and passions and promotes inclusivity and accessibility in our community.
About Ken “Bergy” Liimatta
Ken “Bergy” Liimatta grew up in Calumet. Bergy credited playing hockey as a youth with teaching or reinforcing skills he used in his 27-year career at Schneider National. He spoke highly of the skills learned in the game, namely communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, preparation, goal setting, knowing the role you need to play to help the team succeed, and the ability to take and apply feedback. He also talked about the dedication of volunteers to help the kids in the CLK community, from coaches and referees to concession stand volunteers and other parents who helped drive the kids to their games around the area. And lastly, Bergy spoke fondly of the lifelong friends he made. He credited the foundation he gained in hockey in Calumet as a reason he volunteered his time as an adult to the Junior Achievement organization, where he spent time in classrooms with students and served on its board.
Bergy left us too soon, but not before he had moved from Green Bay back to his hometown, settling into his retirement home on Lake Superior, where he was often heard to utter, “I’m living my dream.” His personal philosophy in life was to leave things in better shape than you found them and to treat people the way you wanted to be treated. He made an indelible impact on those he came into contact with, and this scholarship fund will continue his legacy of giving to future generations.
