The Keweenaw Community Foundation is proud to announce the establishment of the Pewabic Street Community Garden Green Future Fund, a new endowment dedicated to supporting the long-term sustainability, growth, and educational programming of the Pewabic Street Community Garden (PSCG) in Houghton.
Founded in 2007, the Pewabic Street Community Garden has become a beloved green space and community hub. What began as a small, volunteer-led effort has blossomed into a thriving garden that serves families, students, volunteers, and neighbors with opportunities to grow food, connect with nature, and build community.
“This garden has changed our lives and the lives of so many others in Houghton,” said Elena Busova, PSCG Director. “It’s been amazing to see how gardening supports mental and physical health, helps people eat healthier, and creates meaningful cross-generational connections. We started this fund to make sure these benefits continue for years to come.”
Why the Fund Matters

The Green Future Fund will help PSCG meet the increasing demand for garden space, educational outreach, and community programming. The fund will also support PSCG’s transition into a nonprofit organization with a part-time director to lead operations and expand its educational efforts, particularly programs for youth and school partnerships that have been a core part of the garden’s mission since 2010.
Gardeners, neighbors, and local schools alike benefit from the PSCG’s presence. Many families report saving money on food and improving their diets through seasonal gardening, while others value the calming, beautiful green space in the heart of the city. Each growing season, the garden also donates surplus produce to local food pantries and nonprofits, extending its reach beyond its members.
“This fund represents the next chapter for PSCG. We’re ready to grow, literally and figuratively, and to connect with others who believe in gardening as a path to community health, education, and sustainability,” said Elena Busova.
