Pewabic Street Community Garden Green Future Fund

Planting Seeds for Community and Sustainability

Helping families, students, and neighbors grow food, connect with nature, and build community—today and for generations to come.

About the Fund

The Pewabic Street Community Garden Green Future Fund supports the long-term sustainability, growth, and educational programming of the Pewabic Street Community Garden (PSCG) in Houghton. Established in 2007, PSCG has become a beloved green space where families, students, neighbors, and volunteers can grow food, connect with nature, and build community.

This endowment ensures that PSCG can continue to thrive for years to come, meeting the increasing demand for garden space, educational outreach, and community programs. It also supports the garden’s transition from a fully volunteer-led effort into a nonprofit organization with dedicated leadership.

The Garden’s Impact

Pewabic Street Community Garden’s education program.

  • Community Hub: Since its founding, PSCG has welcomed hundreds of gardeners who grow their own food, learn new skills, and connect with neighbors.

  • Education: The garden partners with local schools, including Houghton Elementary, offering hands-on learning opportunities for children since 2010. Mentorship is also provided to new gardeners learning to adapt to Keweenaw’s unique growing conditions.

  • Health and Wellness: Gardeners report saving money on groceries, eating more fresh produce, becoming more physically active, and reducing stress. These benefits echo larger research on the positive effects of gardening.

  • Community Service: Each season, surplus produce is donated to local food pantries and nonprofits, expanding the garden’s reach. Even non-gardening neighbors benefit from the beautiful, blooming green space in the heart of town.

Why This Fund Matters

PSCG is at a pivotal moment in its journey. After 18 years of volunteer-driven success, the garden is preparing to expand its capacity by hiring a part-time director to oversee administration, public outreach, and youth programming. The Green Future Fund provides a sustainable source of support, ensuring that PSCG can:

  • Strengthen educational opportunities for students and families.

  • Expand access to community gardening and outreach.

  • Continue building cross-generational connections that enrich community life.

This fund represents the next chapter for PSCG,” said Elena Busova, PSCG Director. “We’re ready to grow—literally and figuratively—and to connect with others who believe in gardening as a path to community health, education, and sustainability.
— Elena Busova, Director, Pewabic Street Community Garden
