Reminder - Childcare Celebration January 16

The following press release was prepared by the Tree House Family Resources on January 7, 2026.

Houghton, MI — January 7, 2026 — Childcare access in the Copper Country continues to improve as local partners, providers, and families work together toward long-term, community-driven solutions. Recent collaboration has created more than 60 new licensed childcare slots, with new providers opening, existing programs expanding, and a growing network of early childhood professionals uniting around a shared goal: ensuring every family can live, work, and thrive in the region.

While this progress marks a meaningful turning point, the need remains significant. Hundreds of childcare slots are still required to meet local demand—making childcare one of the area’s most urgent infrastructure challenges. The momentum that has taken root reflects a powerful truth that community partners continue to champion- when residents, nonprofits, economic leaders, and educators move together with purpose, real change is possible.

“Each step forward shows what collaboration can accomplish,” said Robin Meneguzzo, Executive Director of the Keweenaw Community Foundation. “The work ahead is substantial, but so is the community’s commitment. The Copper Country is proving that we can make progress when we support families and invest in what they need to thrive.”

Shine Bright Childcare Celebration — January 16

To recognize the progress achieved and continue building momentum, the community is invited to the free Shine Bright Childcare Celebration on January 16th from 5:30-7:30 PM at the Hancock Community Hub.

This family-friendly evening will include:

  • A family dance

  • Kids activities

  • Pizza and treats

  • A chance to connect with local childcare providers, parents, and community partners

Attendees are encouraged to dress in their brightest outfits—the brighter, the better—to celebrate the energy and optimism driving the region’s childcare work forward. Optional diaper or monetary donations for the Tree House Family Resources Baby Closet are welcome but not required.

Community Childcare Conversation

Prior to the celebration, a community conversation will take place from 3:00-4:00 PM in the Community Room at the Hancock Community Hub (2nd Floor). This open discussion will share updates on the Start Small program, highlight recent childcare successes, and outline the needs still present. It is open to anyone who wishes to learn more about supporting local childcare initiatives or about becoming a childcare provider.

Why This Moment Matters

The Shine Bright Celebration reflects more than an event—it is a milestone in a larger community movement. Through coordinated efforts led by Tree House Family Resources, the Keweenaw Community Foundation, Great Start to Quality, the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance, and a growing network of local partners, the region has demonstrated what is possible when childcare is treated as essential infrastructure.

Start Small, the 1:1 childcare business support program, has helped aspiring and current providers overcome barriers, strengthen their operations, and expand high-quality care options. Families across the Copper Country are already feeling the impact—and community leaders believe this momentum can continue with sustained collaboration and investment.
