Director of Finance and Operations Job Summary
The Director of Finance and Operations strengthens the Keweenaw Community Foundation’s (KCF) mission by leading the organization’s financial management, operational infrastructure, and administrative systems. This position ensures the fiscal integrity, operational effectiveness, and compliance necessary to support KCF’s long-term sustainability and strategic growth. The Director oversees accounting and investment administration, budgeting, facilities, technology, compliance, and general organizational operations.

The Keweenaw Community Foundation (KCF), based in Hancock, Michigan, has been a permanent charitable resource for Houghton and Keweenaw Counties since 1994. What You’ll Do
Financial Management and Accounting
Provide fiscal oversight of all KCF funds, ensuring accurate accounting, financial documentation, and recording of investment activity.
Manage and maintain all financial systems, including monthly close, reconciliations, fund statements, spending rate calculations, and processing of gifts, pledges, grants, payables, and investment transactions.
Prepare and monitor the annual operating budget, including multi-year forecasting with the Executive Director.
Oversee annual financial audits, Form 990, coordinating with external auditors and preparing required schedules and documentation.
Maintain up-to-date financial records and reporting in the fund accounting system.
Implement and maintain strong internal controls, policies, and financial procedures.
Prepare timely, accurate financial reports for the Board, committees, the Executive Director, fundholders, donors, and external stakeholders.
Manage relationships with financial institutions, investment consultants, brokers, auditors, and system administrators.
Execute investment-related decisions made by the Board and external advisors, including rebalancing, money moves, and manager transactions.
Operations and Administration
Oversee daily administrative operations, including office systems, equipment, facilities, and technology.
Manage human resources functions: onboarding and benefits administration.
Prepare and submit compliance and governance reporting to regulatory agencies and funders.
Maintain operational policies, procedures, and process documentation across the organization.
Assist with planning, logistics, and financial components of community events, trainings, or gatherings as needed.
Experience and Skills Required
Bachelor’s degree required; CPA or equivalent experience strongly preferred.
Three or more years of professional experience in finance, accounting, or related field; fund accounting experience a plus.
Strong skills in accounting, financial administration, and financial analysis.
Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and investment portfolio transactions.
Exceptional attention to accuracy and the ability to meet deadlines.
Strong Microsoft Excel and financial systems skills; experience in complex fund accounting software preferred.
Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain financial information to non-financial audiences.
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and uphold high ethical standards.
Flexible, adaptive, and committed to continuous improvement and learning.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively across teams.
Willingness to work occasional evenings or weekends for events, as needed.
Desired Experience and Skills
Experience in nonprofit finance, community foundations, or philanthropic services.
Familiarity with investment principles and fund distribution policies.
Experience developing or improving operational processes and systems.
Interest in community engagement and supporting KCF’s mission and values.
Proficiency in Google Workspace and modern cloud-based tools.
Schedule
Hours: 30-40 hours per week (Full-time, exempt position)
Work Arrangement: This is a hybrid position with flexible work arrangements, including a mix of remote and in-office hours
Core Hours: Work is typically conducted during KCF's operational office hours
(9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.), with occasional evening or weekend events as requiredLocation: The position is based in Hancock, Michigan, with in-office work required to support collaboration and community engagement
