New Fund Announcement - Ken "Bergy" Liimatta Hockey Scholarship

JUNE 12, 2023, HANCOCK, MICHIGAN — Thanks to the support of a generous donor, Keweenaw Area Community Foundation announces the Ken “Bergy” Liimatta Hockey Scholarship Fund. This new fund will help provide children in the Calumet-Laurium-Keweenaw (CLK) region with the opportunity to learn how to skate and to participate in the local hockey club, regardless of their household financial situation.

Specifically, the fund will provide scholarships for children to register for the Learn-to-Skate programs offered by the Calumet Figure Skating Club, or to help with the cost of registration for the Calumet Hockey Association youth hockey teams.

This fund is in memory of Ken "Bergy" Liimatta, a Calumet native who attributed his 27-year career success at Schneider National Trucking to the skills he learned while playing hockey as a youth. He highlighted the importance of skills such as communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, preparation, goal-setting, and the ability to take and apply the feedback that he learned while playing the game. Bergy also expressed his gratitude towards the CLK community volunteers who dedicated their time to helping the kids, including coaches, referees, concession stand volunteers, and parents who drove the kids to their games.

Applications for the Ken “Bergy” Liimatta Hockey Scholarship fund will be available this August. Contact the Calumet Figure Skating Club for more information about their Learn-to-Skate program, and the Calumet Hockey Association for more information about registering for youth hockey. Additional donations are welcome, visit www.keweenawgives.org/ken-bergy-liimatta-hockey-scholarship to make your contribution and to learn more about the fund.
