Keweenaw Area Community Foundation Announces Holiday Giving

Hancock, Michigan - The Keweenaw Area Community Foundation (KCF) announces that over $90,000 will be awarded to 46 local organizations over the next month from the Fall Granting program and Donor-Advised Fund holiday giving. Below is the list of organizations receiving grants from our remaining field-of-interest funds, and gifts from our Donor-Advised Funds.

The Portage Health Foundation Community Wellness and Outdoor Recreation Fund grants (totaling $20,339.97) will support:

-Allouez Township, for the Mohawk/Fulton Community Parks project, to add and replace playground equipment in both parks, to provide better, safer, and ADA-accessible equipment.

-Copper Country Intermediate School District: Equipment Loans in the Keweenaw, for their Adaptive Ski Program that will increase the availability of Nordic sit-skis, enable youth and adults with disabilities to enjoy the great outdoors, and increase awareness of issues of inclusivity and adaptive athletics.

 -Houghton FC, for the improvement and maintenance of community athletic fields, in order to meet the demand for outdoor soccer and outdoor recreation in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties. This project is also receiving support from the Funding Youth Initiatives Fund, see below.

-South Range Elementary School, for the “Equipped for Success!” program, which provides both indoor and outdoor recess equipment for students to enjoy. 

The Keweenaw Cross Country Skiing Fund will grant $2,200 towards the Eagle Harbor Township trail signage project to add and maintain signs in the recreation area trails, used by hikers, bikers, skiers, and snowshoers alike.


Funding Youth Initiatives, the Yeoman Family fund, granted $4,000, split between the Dan Schmitt Gift of Music and Education Fund, for their “Gift of Music” scholarships, and Houghton FC, for new community athletic fields. This project is also supported by the Portage Health Foundation Community Wellness and Outdoor Recreation Fund.

The Herman “Winks” Gundlach Fund at KCF regularly supports a number of non-profit organizations in our community. This holiday season, the Herman Gundlach Fund granted a total of $20,000 to the following:

Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly, U.P. Kids!, Salvation Army, Bay Cliff Health Camp, Calumet Theater, Copper Country Community Arts Council, Girl Scouts, Copper Country Humane Society, Kiwanis, the Joe Freed Empowerment Fund, St. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church, Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Pine Mountain Music Festival, Copper Country Suzuki Association, Finlandia Scholarship, Western UP Food Bank, St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry, Trinity Episcopal Food Bank, the CLK Council of Churches Food Bank, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Swedetown Trails Club, SKY: Simple Kindness for Youth, Omega House, K.R.A.C.K., Dial Help, Copper Country Habitat For Humanity, 31 Backpacks, Copper Country Senior Meals, Keweenaw Family Resource Center, and the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter.

Other large donor giving includes a $5,000 gift from Mark and Marilee Shebuski to support U.P. Kids!, Omega House, Swedetown Trails Club, Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club, Keweenaw Family Resource Center, Copper Country Habitat for Humanity, Copper Country Angel Mission, Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter, and the Ahmeek Village Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department.
